VPK - Title I Supported Program

Program Overview

VPK is a state-funded program administered through Broward County Public Schools. These programs are designed to promote school readiness by supporting young children's academic growth, relationship-building skills, self-regulation, and physical development, while also strengthening families.

The program helps prepare children for kindergarten and supports their educational growth by letting parents enroll eligible children in a FREE VPK program at participating schools.

VPK (Title I Supported) Selection Process – Applicants must live within a Title I school boundary. This process is used to select Broward residents that are applying for the full-day, free VPK class supported by State-funded VPK and Federally-funded Title I.

It involves using multiple, education-related, objective criteria for selection of students. Students are selected based upon academic need using the information you provide through the BCPS – VPK/Pre-K Portal online application. Priority is given to students living within the school’s attendance boundary.

Age Requirements

4-year-old program: The child must be 4 years old on or before September 1st of the current school year

Program Eligibility

The child must be a resident of the State of Florida
Families must be residents of Broward County
Applications must be completed by the legal parent/guardian
For free, VPK programs funded by Title I, the student must live within the boundary of a Title I school. Look up your boundary home school

Children with disabilities, homeless, and Foster Care children who meet the requirements above, are encouraged to apply.

Documents Needed to Apply

Proof of age (example: child's ORIGINAL birth certificate)
Proof of Broward County residency
Parent’s photo identification (driver’s license, State ID, etc.)
Obtain a VPK Certificate of Eligibility (for children turning 4 years old on or before September 1st). To do this, parents must submit an application to the State's Family Portal

Comprehensive Services

Instruction and Learning Environment

All classrooms are led by highly qualified educators, including certified teachers and trained instructional staff. Instruction is developmentally appropriate, aligned to early learning standards, and designed to support each child’s individual needs through structured, play-based learning.

The Early Childhood Education Department – VPK/Pre-K classrooms utilize The Creative Curriculum System for Preschool, Heggerty Phonological Awareness, and Conscious Discipline to implement developmentally appropriate instructional strategies and ensure that students enrolled in VPK/Pre-K classrooms are fully prepared for entering Kindergarten.

Student Monitoring

The Coordinated Screening and Progress Monitoring Program is the statewide, standardized program known as Florida Assessment of Student Thinking (FAST) Star Early Literacy. It is implemented in all VPK programs as required by s. 1002.68, F.S., and used to assess student achievement of the performance standards established in s. 1002.67(1)(a), F.S., in early literacy and mathematics. In addition to the Florida Assessment of Student Thinking (FAST) Star Early Literacy (VPK students only), BCPS-VPK/Pre-K students are also administered classroom progress monitoring assessments for letter names, letter sounds, concepts of print, and phonological awareness.
